Unequal Justice

Unequal Justice

The overturn of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 marked an important event in the fight over reproductive rights and bodily autonomy. Lawmakers’ decision to overturn this law serves as a reminder that they can make unjust decisions about our personal freedoms based on their religious and moral beliefs rather than what is ethical. Women already face hardships with their reproductive health and this serves as another fatal blow towards women’s rights and gender equality. When abortions are made illegal, many will resort to traveling far or adopt unsafe options. In addition, providers and patients can face legal punishments for seeking out life-saving treatments.

Overturning Roe v. Wade will affect families from all different backgrounds and income levels. While this overturn affects women’s reproductive rights, it is another step towards lawmakers voting against other constitutional freedoms. As a woman, this topic is very important to me as it affects the personal health and lives of myself and many individuals. So much effort went into putting Roe v. Wade in place only for it to be taken away by a government which prides itself on “freedom”.

My work shows Lady Justice on the Supreme Court building with a keyhole and a hand over her with a uterus shaped key. It shows how lawmakers can make decisions about our bodily autonomy due to their religious beliefs. I feel it is important to continue pushing for reproductive rights as it is important for individual freedoms, gender equality, healthcare, and justice.
